Kanye West

Kanye Omari West (born June 8, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia) is an American record producer and rapper based in Chicago, Illinois.

  • I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family, it says, 'They're looting.' You see a white family, it says, 'They're looking for food.' And, you know, it's been five days [waiting for federal help] because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I've tried to turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I'm calling my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can give, and just to imagine if I was down there, and those are my people down there. So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help -- with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way -- and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us! [...] George Bush doesn't care about black people.

  • Ya'll might as well get the music ready 'cause this is gonna take a while. When I had my accident, I found out at that moment, nothing in life is promised except death. If you have the opportunity to play this game called life, you have to appreciate every moment. A lot of people don't appreciate their moment until it's passed. And then you got to tell those Al Bundy stories: 'You remember when I...' Right now, it's my time and my moment, thanks to the fans, thanks to the accident, thanks to God, thanks to Roc-A-Fella, Jay-Z, Dame Dash, G, my mother, Rhymefest, everyone that's helped me. And I plan to celebrate and scream and pop champagne every chance I get, 'cause I'm at the Grammy's baby! I know everybody asked me the question, they wanted to know, 'What, Kan, I know he's gonna wile out, I know he's gonna do something crazy.' Everybody wanted to know what I would do, if I didn't win... I guess we'll never know!

  • First beat I did, was in seventh grade, on my computer. I got into doing beats for the video games I used to try to make. My game was very sexual. The main character was, like, a giant penis. It was like Mario Brothers, but the ghosts were, like, vaginas. Mind you, I'm 12 years old, and this is stuff 30-year-olds are programming. You'd have to draw in and program every little step-it literally took me all night to do a step, 'cause the penis, y'know, had little feet and eyes.

  • Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'ma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!

Top floor, the view alone will leave ya breathless."
- "Jesus Walks," "The College Dropout"

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me." --Psalms 23:4

"We still, pull up in Spreewells,

The ice sends me chills, like Gold Member, I love gold,

but what's the point to gain the world if ya lose ya soul?"
- "Fly Away", off Miri Ben-Ari's "The Hip Hop Violinist"

"For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with angels." --Mark 8:35-37

I said I want my chariot to pick me up

And take me brother for a ride"

"And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." --2 Kings 2:11

About West

  • "With Kanye, the arrogant thing always comes up, but think about what that does for your ability to make art. He doesn't even question himself as to whether he can do it or not. He does it fast and good, and he doesn't stop on the side of the road to wonder if he can do it." - John Mayer (From MTV.com)

  • "The one thing I fear for [Kanye] the most is if you keep talking about being the greatest, people eventually are going to want to watch you fail." - John Mayer (From MTV.com)

  • "It’s alright to say ‘bitch’ and ‘motherfucker' on the corner, but when you start operating on a different level you can’t talk like that. Fine, you’re trying to get some street acceptance. Now that you got that, get back to your roots. You know that’s not where you came from. You know that’s not how you were raised." - Ray West (Kanye's father) on Rolling Stone magazine

  • "He's a jackass" - Barack Obama commenting privately on West interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards (From the Associated Press)
