James Marsters

James Wesley Marsters is an actor, best known for playing the popular character Spike, a vampire, in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff series Angel.

As Spike

[Angel has just saved Rachel from a violently abusive boyfriend, while Spike watches — and narrates — from the shadows.]
Spike [as Rachel]: How can I thank you, you mysterious, black-clad hunk of a night thing?
Spike [as Angel]: No need, little lady, your tears of gratitude are enough for me. You see, I was once a bad-ass vampire, but love and a pesky curse defanged me. Now I'm just a big, fluffy puppy with bad teeth.
[Rachel steps closer to Angel; Angel steps back, warding her off with his hands.]
Spike [as Angel]: No, not the hair! Never the hair!
Spike [as Rachel]: But there must be some way I can show my appreciation.
Spike [as Angel]: No — helping those in need's my job. And working up a load of sexual tension, and prancing away like a magnificent poof is truly thanks enough!
Spike [as Rachel]: I understand. I have a nephew who's gay, so...
Spike [as Angel]: Say no more. Evil's still afoot... and I'm almost out of that Nancy-boy hair gel that I like so much. Quickly, to the Angel-mobile — AWAY!
Spike [as himself]: Go on with you. Play the big, strapping hero while you can. You have a few surprises coming your way. The Ring of Amara, a visit from your old pal Spike, and — oh, yeah — your gruesome, horrible death.
In the Dark, Angel, season 1

[The lights in the Wolfram & Hart elevator suddenly go out.]
Spike: [whispering] I know what this is. [shouting] YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME TO HELL, PAVAYNE!
[Emergency lights come on and an alarm sounds.]
Spike: Oh. Well, that's just something I say... when, uh... it gets dark.
Lineage, Angel, season 5

Spike: You were there? Oh, please! If every vampire who said he was at the crucifixion was actually there, it would have been like Woodstock. I was actually at Woodstock. That was a weird gig. I fed off a flower person, and I spent the next six hours watching my hand move.
School Hard, Buffy, season 2

Spike: You've got Slayer problems. That's a bad piece of luck. Do you know what I find works real good with Slayers? Killing them.
School Hard, Buffy, season 2

  • No fair going into the ring unless he tags you first.(To Dru when Giles tries to kill Angel)

Lyrics

"Rest In Peace"

:Spike:
'
I died
So many years ago
But you can make me feel, like it isn't so
Why you've come to be with me
I think I finally know
Mmmmm
You're scared ashamed of what you feel
You can't tell the ones you love
You know they couldn't deal
Whisper in a dead man's ear doesn't make it real

That's great, but I don't wanna play
'Cause being with you touches me
More than I can say
Since I'm only dead to you I'm sayin' stay away
And let me rest in peace

Let me rest in peace
Let me get some sleep
Let me take my love and bury it
In a hole six foot deep
I can lay my body down but I can't find my sweet release
So let me rest in peace

You know...
You gotta willing slave
And you just love to play the thought
That you might misbehave
So till you do I'm tellin' you
Stop visitin' my grave
And let me rest in peace

I know, I should go
But I follow you like a man possed
There's a traitor here, beneath my breast
And it hurts me more than you've ever guessed
If my heart could beat, it would break my cheast
But I can see... you're unimpressed
So leave me be...

And let me rest in peace
Let me get some sleep
Let me take my love and bury it
In a hole six foot deep
I can lay my body down but I can't find my sweet release
So let me rest in peace
Why won't you... let me rest in peace

One baby, two, maybe three more years
You'll be a full hot baby, have all your curves
And here's a little taste of irony
You'll be a too-hot baby, too good for me
Lyrics for Dangerous http://www.ghost-of-the-robot.net/lyrics_dangerous.php

She's an angel
But she can't see it
She's got wings,
But she can't feel 'em
She's an angel
But she can't see it
But she's flying above me every day
Every day of my life
Lyrics for Angel, http://www.ghost-of-the-robot.net/lyrics_angel.php

We can find ourselves a quiet room
And let our hands run free
You can tickle underneath my arm
All the way down to behind my bended knee
Lyrics for Runaway, http://www.ghost-of-the-robot.net/lyrics_runaway.php

You'll find yourself a man.
He's swears he'll protect you
From the dark.
Lyrics for This Town, http://www.ghost-of-the-robot.net/lyrics_thistown.php

I get blinded when she opens the door
It's like looking into the sun, you know
Lyrics for Smile, http://www.ghost-of-the-robot.net/lyrics_smile.php

I'll find another one
No I don't care
[Spoken] Maybe she's got a best friend man I dunno...
Lyrics for Katie, http://www.ghost-of-the-robot.net/lyrics_katie.php

The way you look at me I can tell what a kiss brings
You make me want to be BAD... YEAH

Interviews

  • Spike's was a very simple philosophy when we met him. I think that now he is forming one, and I think that the best thing that he has come up with so far is that a lot of being human is about degradation and pain and humiliation. I think he's starting to understand that for the first time.

I think he got away from that by becoming a vampire and that's why he was so keen to stop being human, but he's getting back to being human now.

  • I was uncomfortable with smoking too much because a lot of young kids watch and I didn't want to make that cool.
    • James Marsters on Life After Buffy

  • I have turned roles down because they are rapists. It's something I don't even want to watch. If I even click on it on TV, I have to click it off or I'll put my foot through the screen... What you see on that screen is just my terror at having to do that scene.
    • James Marsters on Life After Buffy, on the rape scene in Buffy the Vampire Slayer "Seeing Red"

  • he (Spike) probably fell in love with Buffy when he first saw her, but didn't admit it to himself because he was already in love with Dru...

  • I'm really interested with the way light plays on images and one of the artists that really reawakened my interest in comic books was Frank Miller and his treatment of Daredevil, and then Wolverine and, of course, Batman.
